A quick Froogle/Amazon query pulls something we knew was coming, but just never thought we would see the day. About what you ask? Why just another Blu-ray set-top player. The Samsung one has been out since June but the Sony, Panasonic, and Pioneer players are long over due although it seems the Panasonic BMP-BD10 might just be available. There is one retailer on Amazon selling it, Markertek (where we got most of the hardware for our
DIY component cables) has it shipping on 10/17, and Crutchfield lists it, but shows the $1299 Blu-ray player out of stock. Hopefully we will see this player in the wild by the end of next week and then maybe the Blu-ray ball will finally get rolling.

A member of the HomeTheaterForum.com already has the player with pics and all. The owner gives it a pretty good review.

wow not to seem stupid or a anti-blu-ray but why the hell would you play $1300 for a blu-ray player when the PS3 is more then half the price? what makes this so special? i am happy with my HD-DVD player and i just picked up, new and old willy wonka movies and corpse bride and Army of Darkness in glorious HD.

Sweet.
This shows just what support the Blu-ray Disc format has i terms of CE makers. Sure It's pricey but what new technology is not? HD-DVD is not cheap obly cheaper but then it's a inferior technology.

@Addex
Inferior? Look how easy it is to make blanket comments without backing it with facts.
Dub Express @ Oct 13th 2006 12:50PM
I'm still waiting for a dual-format player.
I don't want to be caught as an early adopter of the wrong format...
Can't NEC and Ricoh get together and solve this problem for us?

Looking forward to buying panasonic blu-ray player and discs
yes hd-dvd is inferior as I just came from Home theatre store and they had it set up to a small tv set if hd-dvd was as good as they say then why have it hooked up the way they have it in stores which is crappy
Addex @ Oct 13th 2006 2:37PM
Mark Zolton:
Inferior because of less support from CE manufacturers, content providers. 50GB vs. 30GB. Less thruput which means less bitrate for audio and video.
HD-DVD IS Inferior to Blu-ray Disc.
And HD-DVD is like giving even more money to M$ since they made HDi and VC1.

"And HD-DVD is like giving even more money to M$ since they made HDi and VC1"
future blu-ray movies will also be encoded in VC1. early blu-ray releases used mpeg2 and had inferior quality to hd-dvd.

Sony Aus isn't selling the the BDP-S1 yet, though are offering the BWU-100 (apparently uses Panasonic chips) for PC's .
And the service manual has been out for a month or so-search for DMP-B at:

HD-DVD is not inferior from the reviews i read they gave it to HD-DVD being better upconversion on old DVDs to near HD quality and great quality plus they have better movies on HD-DVD. Even if it was inferior it doesn't mean anything Beta was suprior to VHS and it lost. People claim the PSP is SUPERIOR to the DS and the DS is kicking it's ass hard. Also HD-DVD movies and players are selling better then blu-ray. I love mine it comes in so clear and looks amazing. Plus the HD-DVD for the Xbox 360 is going to seriously boost HD-DVD seeing how there aren't gonna be many PS3's for a while and EVEN FEWER blu-ray players seeing how Sony has said they want to concentrate on the PS3 more. When companies see the HD-DVD taking off and blu-ray not doing anythign because no players they will switch and some already have.

HD-DVD is not equal to Blue Ray in definition on early disks (and reviewed as inferior) due to the compression used (mpeg2), plus glitches with a chip on the Blue Ray player. However once they start using VC-1 for example resolution will be EQUAL to HD-DVD, but NOT better. The ONLY advantage Blue Ray has over HD-DVD is disk capacity, period. They BOTH are encoded in 1080p, so quality is the SAME (high end HD-DVD player generation 2 will output 1080p, same as Blue Ray). So if all you want to do is watch movies, then both are the same, and you better go with the cheaper priced HD-DVD players, since you will get the SAME resolution out.
