A trio of new HD DVDs from Universal including Miami Vice
Universal Studios just keeps on cranking out the HD DVDs. First up, Miami Vice is hitting the shelves on December 5 as a DVD/HD DVD combo disc embedded with Dolby Digital TrueHD 5.1 audio track. Then the following week The Hulk is finally seeing the light of day and Kevin Costner's Field of Dreams are going to be available on the format. Both of these discs are going to carry a price of $29.99 and the Miami Vice combo will hit at $39.99. At this rate, sooner or later Universal is going to run out of titles in their vast library -- well, maybe not, but they are sure releasing a bunch of HD DVDs lately.

They may be cranking them out, but is anyone buying them? I still don't know even 1 person that has an HD DVD (or BluRay) player. And I'll be dammed if I'm going to pay $30 for a movie.

Both of my movies were $14.95 at Amazon (Serenity and Ray)
Right now mainly the enthusiasts are buying the players/movies. However next year with more price decreases we'll see more consumers jumping in. I expect that it'll take $200 players for the formats to really take off. That'll likely come in 2008 with generation 4 or generation 5 product.

Oh yeah I don't have a player yet. I'm liking the Generation 2 players from Toshiba. I may mate that with a 30" Direct View TV early next year and wait to see how the DLP vs LCD wars pan out in the projector and rear projector markets.

I plan on picking up the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on drive. It's $200 and comes with a remote control and HD-DVD version of King Kong. But I definately won't be buying titles for more than $25. I guess I'll have to search online...or maybe join up Netflix...I think this time around purchasing movies may be a practice in futility. If it's all going the way of downloads in 5 years.
It would be great to have a subscription service like the music services out there.

Plenty of movies to be had for less than $25 but Netflix is a great way to feed your HD DVD player with HD movies for cheap.

long story short is I spent a lot of money building up my DVD collection. I've seen HD-DVD and BluRay in action - and they look great, but not good enough for me to start over again. a Progressive Scan DVD player hooked up HDMI on my HDTV looks excellent to me, and I'll be sticking with it for a while yet.

I was again think of getting a HD player, until I saw the $39 price tag. I don't need or want a $500 player for rentals. I also don't want to drop $30-$40 on each movie.
