The launch of another Tickle-Me Elmo marks the start of the holiday shopping season, and let us guess that a new HDTV is on the top of your list. While our own
annual HDTV shopping guide is still a few weeks off, Alan Lofft compiled five useful HDTV shopping tips that should get you by till we release our comprehensive guide. These five tips are great guidelines to understand before starting the overwhelming experience of shopping for new technology. We have heard it said, and totally believe it, that
people spend more time shopping for a new HDTV then they do a car. There is simply so many options out there that Alan sums it up at the end of this article by making you repeat: "
There is no best, there is no best." Keep that, along with these five tips, in mind when shopping for your new HDTV.

the thing that really gets me about HDTV reviews is what they don't say. i recently bought an HDTV after doing tons of research and going to multiple stores, but the initial tv i bought (a Sharp 37" 40U, one of the highest rated LCD TVs) was returned because it's processor made my DVDs look like ass and the red push was simply unacceptable-- I didn't get to see it work HD, as I took it back immediately. When I made the return, the sales guy pushed me towards a Plasma, and I ended up buying a Panasonic in the same size and am happy with the choice, as HD looks great and so do DVD movies (and SD is fine as well). With the limited selection of HD sources, it probably goes without saying that one should consider what SD/DVD will look like, but very few reviews mention this. My best advice, heard from many others as well, is to take your own DVD to the store with you and don't buy the TV unless the store will let you play it and adjust the settings.

The two at the top of my list right now are the Sharp LC37D90U and the Westinghouse LVM-42W2. But I'm still waiting for the fallout of CEDIA 2006. There were a few units announced at that show that I am very interested in, especially the 42" Sharp 1080p unit.
