PS3: No price cut for the US, Dolby TrueHD audio support in but component cables out?
With the November launch date closing in, we still have a lot of unanswered questions about Sony's Playstation 3 and apparently so do they. What we do know is the 20% price cut in Japan will not be applied in the US, and that 80/20 launch split is up in the air. In an interview with Wired, Phil Harrison said the Japanese price adjustment was to hit "magic price points" after consumers there reacted badly to the initially announced price. In the same article fellow Sony execs Kaz Hirai and Ken Kutaragi were unsure if component video cables would be included, and seemed to lean towards "no". With HDMI already confirmed out of the $500/$600 box, we're trying to figure out how Sony is going start the HD era without any cables, S-video just isn't very next gen. At least there's some good news to report, as they officially announced Dolby TrueHD audio support for up to 7.1 channels and Dolby Digital 5.1 support for games. Although there aren't any Dolby TrueHD Blu-ray movies out yet, once there are a large number of players on the shelf we're sure studios will include it, or at least bring them over from cross platform HD DVD releases. You don't need David Copperfield to figure out that a lower price and guaranteed out of the box HDTV support would go a long way to getting us from behind this keyboard and camped out in front of local electronics retailers.Read - Sony Execs Talk PS3

I am still wondering how many of the early adopters(gamers/gen public) have the proper tv/monitor to get full use of this console. I wonder how many will use composite cables, how many do not have HDTV or care their games are not "displaying" at their fullest resolution. I think as long as they see an image, they will be happy. As for the rest of us that know what we want and know what to expect out of the image, we can always buy an hdmi/component cable and move on.

Sony, keep your ancient analog cables, ive already got an hdmi port ready on my new kdl40xbr2 lcd.

Sony, You can keep both cables and your stupid overpriced, Blurry format box. I can't stand Sony anymore.

So, the "Only Console Which Supports The True Resolution Of HD" ((c) (TM) and (R) Sony's PR department's collective ass) will come with a composite cable. I guess they must have found a way to output 1080p over component.
And the price drop is only for Japan, because consumers there reacted badly. Well I guess Sony now officially considers the consumers from the rest of the world to be sheep.

In my previous post, please read "composite" instead of "component".

In other news, PS3 said to "punch you right in the face" everytime its turned on. Sony is confident this feature will be a system seller.

You mean instead of a HDMI cable, they ship Uwe Boll with every PS3 ?
Thats a killer feature. A lot of people will buy a PS3 just to torture Uwe Boll.

This works for me.
They packed in an HDMI port on the 500 USD sku inplace of a cheapo component cable: i'll take that trade off anyday. THANKS SONY!

Well, I wont be getting a PS3 now. I can afford a 400 dollar one, but not 500 with no games or other accessories. I hope Sony changes their mind. They are so unfair to the USA/North America. Japan and Europe get all the cool features and better pricing (For the Most part). Please Sony, Reconcider the Pricing!

Guys! The PS3 is region free...

The cable for PS3 will be the same as the cable for PS2, and PS1. So, sony could get away with selling the PS3 without a cable at all. I dont plan on using the shipped cable anyhow. As i'll just unplug the ps2, and re-plug the PS3.
