'Jeopardy!' and 'Wheel of Fortune' going high-def tonight
Although we don't cover these shows in our daily HDTV listings, tonight is the first night that Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are supposed to go HD. We realize that many local affiliates are not setup for syndication, but we will be checking our local stations in hopes to catch some HD game shows. We look forward to checking back and seeing how many people were able to enjoy the shows in HD.

Curse you and your daily doubles, Trebek!
I'll take "Anal Bum Covers" in 720p.
Kevin M. @ Sep 11th 2006 5:09PM
Yes! WLS carries it. Damn it's pretty.

WLUK in Green Bay started running TV spots for Wheel and Jeopardy advertising they were now in high def, though these looked like Sony Television-produced spots and it wouldn't surprise me if they would run these in error. I would like to be able to verify if they actually are broadcasting the shows in HD, but they won't allow Time Warner to provide their HD signal and their OTA HD signal still comes in lousy where I live.

Not airing in hd in Seattle.
bgdc @ Sep 11th 2006 6:46PM
How much did Vanna spend on botox to prepare for this?
Gary @ Sep 11th 2006 7:09PM
Watching in CT on Comcast. No HD here.
Nick B @ Sep 11th 2006 7:11PM
I'm watching in CT on Adelphia (Comcast company). Its in 720p here. Nothing spectacular though, seems kind of pointless.
Why do they still center things in widescreen broadcasts. Can't they think of some better layouts / screen usage?
This bothers me w/ sports broadcasts too.

No HD in Pittsburgh for Jeopardy. Comcast.
Gary @ Sep 11th 2006 7:54PM
It's left centered to make it easier to crop for SD. Thankfully some primetime shows are letterboxed for SD broadast which lets the shows use the entire HD screen.
Bernie @ Sep 11th 2006 7:41PM
HD in Atlanta on NBC WXIA
Vince @ Sep 11th 2006 8:47PM
Looked like crap on channel 10 south florida.. I don't think they actually had it in HD looked like streched 480 still.
David @ Sep 11th 2006 8:55PM
HD on TWC NYC.
Rob @ Sep 11th 2006 9:03PM
Both were in HD on WABC, NY.
Randy Perry @ Sep 11th 2006 10:32PM

Jeff N. @ Sep 12th 2006 12:16AM
Not in HD here in Raleigh/Durham. But I did see it in HD on Directv Channel 86 the ABC HD New York feed. OTA WTVD was standard 4:3.

Update on WLUK Green Bay's situation...
------
The game shows "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" may trumpet their broadcasting in high-definition as of today, but it will be a while before they're transmitted that way by WLUK.
"We need additional HD equipment to record syndicated programs," said Pat Krohlow, marketing director.
Fox network programming is fed directly to the station's HD transmitter, while syndicated shows need to be recorded and played back, Krohlow said."
------
So they're running the ads saying it's in HD when in fact it isn't. Oh well. Supposedly there may also be a deal in the works for Fox HD in Green Bay according to the article:

Hell may be freezing over, folks...
linda @ Sep 12th 2006 9:38AM
taped it last night and caught just the first minute or so (i'm in central florida). definitely a new set, alex remarked about having to wear different makeup now, there was a sony hd logo in the bottom left hand corner. but the picture was centered on the screen and not the usual hd format. however, it did look nice!!
Jason @ Sep 12th 2006 9:18AM
I watched both in HD in CT on Cablevision last night.
I can't believe they bothered to put either show in HD. Hooray, I can see Pat Sajak's decrepit face in 720p glory.
Dean @ Sep 12th 2006 11:56AM
Not in HD on KGO TV in the San Francisco area. I just emailed the station to complain.
Goose @ Sep 12th 2006 12:39PM
Jeff N,
Thats strange that you wouldn't get it in HD. I live in Chapel Hill and Jeopardy was in HD while Wheel of Fortune was not. I'm watching on TW, so I'll look on OTA tonight.
DAN @ Sep 13th 2006 11:43AM
NOT HD IN JACKSON, MS
Dan @ Sep 14th 2006 1:26PM
Obviously Sony Pictures Entertainment is broadcasting HD from their studios, and there's only HD cameras on set now (even though the producers' booth still has only SD monitors, LOL). It will be probably another year before the majority of affiliates have upgraded to HD equipment. It will be many many years before HD is so much more prevalent than SD that directors and producers actually start using the entire screen space offered by HD.
Let's not forget that HD is still very much in the 'early adoption' stage.
We updated the Wheel a lot for HD... All new colors on the moneyplate, all the white borders have been replaces with sparkly borders. New larger and darker shadows. Updated colors and materials for all the big-money wedges, new larger and more spectacular Free Spin disc, etc etc etc. Not sure how much of this is even noticeable to folks that didn't work on it, lol!
Dan @ Sep 14th 2006 6:04PM
additionally, how strange that there's folks from Chapel Hill and Jackson, MS posting on this random blog.
I was born in Jackson and grew up in Chapel Hill before coming out to LA. :)
MikeS @ Sep 14th 2006 9:27PM
HD on Greensboro TWC!!!!!!!!!!!!
PITA @ Sep 19th 2006 7:10PM
Sweet, we have it here in Houston on the CBS affiliate
Nivek @ Sep 21st 2006 1:22PM
Sacramento gets them in HD - 720p. While not breath-taking like the NFL, it is a marked improvement over what D* puts on their SD channels (I checked the D* HD channel and the OTA channel). On some shots of the wheel, you had a better view.
Jeff Songster @ Oct 13th 2006 8:03PM
Wheel and Jeopardy are available in Sacramento CA via channel 10... really shiny sets...
