Sun joins Blu-ray Disc Association Board of Directors
Coming directly on the heels of Fox announcing we will see Blu-ray Java enabled movies in 2006, the Blu-ray Disc Association has announce Sun Microsystems is joining the Board of Directors. Sun will continue to play a key role in supporting content providers enabling BD-J support in future Blu-ray releases. Reuters reports that the BDA is looking for "more muscle" to join with the various CE manufacturers and content companies although they did not indicate who that is specifically. If this truly leads to more announcements like the one earlier today and advanced BD-J features in an increasing number of Blu-ray movies then we applaud the move.Read - 20th Century Fox, Sun, Time Warner boost Blu-ray - Reuters

I'm sure this will fuel the fires of Dvorak's assertion that Apple's purchase of Sun will transpire sooner than later.
But it does make sense for Sun to join the BDA. After all, the BDA uses Java instead of Microsoft's proprietary iHD system as used on the HD-DVD platform.

Sure! Its about time. Every one goes Bly-Ray :) Only a few fool HD DVD backers still pray Toshiba`s crap :D

#3: If by "Crap," you mean "Superior picture, sound, performance, and cost," then yes, there are still being buying "crap."

Xyzzy, sooner or later you come over to the BD camp. The "PQ" you desire will be achieved with MPEG4/DL (or something newer). Hardware and software will also be improved. And all this talk about vc1 being the only way is not in the best interest of the BDA. There are more ways to skin a cat.

If by skinning a cat you mean charging people $1000 for a BD player then I'll stick with HD DVD then.

Looks like yet another round of Sun vs Microsoft (this time with the high-def disc formats).
The first battle nearly tanked the company, ruined the stock, with Sun receiving some Microsoft pocket change ("and future support") of around $1 bill last year.
You'd think they'd learn from the past and not oppose Microsoft yet again. Oh well, Sun's decision (for Blu-ray support only) will at least position them for an eventual takeover [Sony perhaps?].

#5: If Blu-Ray starts producing a superior product, I'll be MORE than happy to support it.
Until then, I'm enjoying the highest quality HD movies available to consumers at a price of only $450. And if BD wins, I'll still have a kick-ass upconverting player for my current DVD collection.
It's a win-win situation for me.
