I remember hearing interviews from E3 saying that the price of the XBOX 360 and the HD-DVD drive combined would be less than the PS3.

That would make perfect sense from a marketing standpoint. It would be worth taking a loss on the drive just for the amount of sales they'd get over the PS3 based on that fact alone.
