'Miami Vice' shot directly in HD video
There is a new generation of film makers that are throwing out the norm and embracing high-def. Micheal Mann is willing to work with all new technical difficulties that arises when shooting in high-def. He shot Collateral two years ago in high-def but that flick didn't take place cruising across the Gulf of Mexico at 70 miles an hour. All that salt water and humidity plays havoc with the cameras but he did it. After four and a half months of testing alone, Miami Vice was shot totally in high-def. The filmmaker hasn't given up on standard film but the new medium does provide the viewer with a different experience.

I think film looks great but Digital HD has come of age. The Panavision Genesis is H-O-T and I've heard little complaints about its output.
If you've got $17k to spare even you can enjoy 35mm full frame sensors and HD lenses. www.red.com there definitely is a revolution underway and Indie "films" will continue to get better and better and better. Much to my happiness.

Digital HD is really awesome...it helps save money, can be easily edited and can be directly transferred to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray without much problems.
What's the maximum resolution of digital HD though? 1080p? Film does have a higher resolution but I guess it doesn't make much of a difference.

Digital Cameras can go all the way up to 4k. The Genesis doesn't list a maximum rez though it does 4:4:4 video on a Super 35mm lens. Superman Returns was filmed on a Genesis and I had no complaints about the quality.

I thought the film looked spectacular and I've had concerns over the resolution gap between 35mm and standard HD.
I would have loved to have seen this flick digitally projected, because it certainly would have looked sharper than watching it in its digital-to-film conversion edition.

WRONG
Actally, this movie was NOT shot entirely with HD cameras. Zodiac, the upcomming David Fincher movie is officially the first to do so. Google or IMDB it for youself. I know for a fact that Mr. Mann used film for some of the helicopter shots and also for a few fast moving shots (very high framerates, which HD cannot do). They did use the Thompson Viper for most of it though....even destroying a few of these half million hd cams in speedboat scene accidents.

its a pity the film sucked so much really.

HD can't do high frame rates? WTF are you talking about, Deuce? HD can easily do 60fps.
