While Paramount isn't bringing that many titles to the HD DVD party this year, one of its biggest summer movies is making the trip.
Mission: Impossible III was announced for the format at
yesterday's DVD Forum meeting, with date and other specifics yet undetermined Paramount did state all the extras were filmed in HD -- a welcome change from the 480i SD extras that have largely accompanied releases so far -- and that it will take advantage of HD DVD's picture-in-picture feature to show video commentary from the director as the movie continues to play. Also mentioned was
The Look and Sound of Perfect marketing campaign, set to roll out online ads this week, a bus tour leaving Denver in mid-September, and television spots to follow in the fourth quarter. We're still
hoping for a day-and-date release with the DVD version but that remains to be seen.

Im sure the Blu-Ray version will sell millions vs the thousands for HD-DVD
Ok so I cant help myself :p

Ignorance is bliss, BLUE RAY is such an inferior technology MPEG2 codec...please..how old is that codec...not to mention the fact that you have to be a real sucker to buy a player twice the price of HD-DVD, less picture quality (even with its larger capacity, which BTW has yet to be produced).
Oh ya, the cost of converting any production line flirts with 1-2 milllion dollars and will be limited to single layer disc while HD-DVD will cost roughly 250000 thousand dollars to convert.
Well, I guess Sony didn't learn from their past experiences i.e. Betamax, SACD, Mini-Disc, etc
I suggest you do your home work before you open your mouth. I don't care about who release what, but rather which one offer me the greatest quality of picture and sound!
>>> Did you hear about TRUE HD 5.1 sound codec? ;-)
I know, I know, I'm beating a dead dog!!!!!

Umm my comment was tongue and cheek and not to be taken seriously
emmanuel @ Aug 8th 2006 11:25PM
Um... what did any of Paramount's news have to do with Blu Ray?
Richard Lawler @ Aug 8th 2006 11:36PM
Parris: lol.
He was making a joke about the close of my earlier post and bit of disagreement it spawned.

I have to say, the HD-DVD fanboys are getting a little aggressive these days....
I seriously don't see the point in banging on about the same old arguments which are only relevant in the short-term.
Toutser:
What if the BDA sorts out these initial problems they are having? What if they move away from MPEG2 to a better codec? What if it turns out that the movies to come out on 50GB disks actually are better quality than HD-DVD movies? etc... etc...
Will you still support HD-DVD then? I guess you will say you will.
Then, what if HD-DVD goes the way of the dodo, will you still support it till its dying days? I guess you'll say that'll never happen.
Try and keep your arguments civilised and constructive...oh yeah, and learn to understand when someone is joking!
Mikes @ Aug 9th 2006 10:24AM
I'll support blu-ray IF:
They dump mpeg-2 and use VC-1 or some other comparable compression to fit good bitrates and PQ on a 25GB single layer bd disc.
Prices on players are $500 or LESS. $1000 is too much when HD-DVD is 1/2 that.

"BLUE RAY is such an inferior technology MPEG2 codec...please"
Are you serious? Blu-ray supports MPEG2, VC1 and H.264 just like HD-DVD. Apparently the initial version of the Blu-ray authoring software only supports MPEG2. I'll bet that since HD-DVD launched first, Blu-ray was feeling the heat to release before they were completely ready. I'm sure Sony doesn't mind getting paid for the studios licensing their MPEG2 patents either :)

Let me first apologize if I came across either agressive or non-constructive. I just feel that I'm reading a lot from BLUE-RAY Fanboys and they have nothing really to say but, what if..., wait...it's coming!
To answer your question if I'll support HD-DVD till the end. The answer is NO. Although I hate Sony and it's proprietary strategies, I am one of those enthusiast that will dish out any amount required to acquire the best picture and sound quality (I guess within my budget)
I wouldn't blink an eye to acquire for example a SED TV even if I had to dish out 7000-10000$ since it appears that they have mixed the quality of tube tv's and the sleek thin frames of the FDPs.
Time will tell which format will survive! My only hope is that they don't repeat the outcome of the SACD/DVD-Audio...That was sad, I had purchased a lot of those disc.
Once again, sorry to have offended you. I just wanted to make the current specs clear for every un-informed BRD fans out there that just shout down HD-DVD.

I had to search to find this one, but apparently M:I3 is actually coming out on *both* formats, as well as DVD:

It does appear that the BD version won't include IME.
