I mentioned this in a previous story, but I think the war will be won by simple marketing. The average consumer does not know what a Blu-ray disc is, and may not take the time to learn. But when they hear the acronym HD-DVD, they have a basic understanding that its a DVD in high-def. The war will be won by soccer moms at Best Buy spending as little time researching their purchase as possible.
Picture quality, features, and resolution are just ammunition for us early adopters. The war will reach its peak when Joe Average starts to buy.
