James Cameron's next flick shot in 3D HD to get you back into theaters
James Cameron seems to understand that the movie theater isn't offering much beyond what a home theater can these days, so he's trying to bring something new to the table. His new film Avatar, due in theaters in 2008, will be the first full length feature film to use a 3D high definition camera he's been working on for several years now. Our friend Mike at HD For Indies sat in on a panel with Cameron and his partner, cinematographer Vince Pace earlier this year where they discussed some of the specifics of the technology. It will be interesting to see if this new tech can get us out of our home theaters and into the movie theater to watch a love story between an alien and a hybrid human/alien set against a backdrop of racial discord. Sounds like a Blu-ray vs. HD DVD allegory.

It is nice to see someone is looking to give us something new at theatres. I am sick of hearing studios complain we are not going to the movies because of piracy. The fact is we can get a great picture and sound at home for the same price if we just wait a couple of months. However if studios can bring us new and better pictures at the theatre it would give us a reason to go. I just took my son to see Over the Hedge and the picture was good, but I know it will be just as good if I watch it at home. Lets hope other studios and/or directors start to push the technological envelope so we will have a reason other than screen size to go see a movie.

I saw Superman at the Imax and I was pleasantly surprised with how 3d changed my usual movie going experience. I would definely go see another movie that intergrated it in.

I have been to the movies about twice in the last 6 months. Not because I wasn't interested. But because it is cheaper to BUY the DVD a few months later and watch it as many times as I want, than to buy a ticket for me and my girlfriend. The sales at movie theatres go down, so they raise the prices, thus driving more people away.
