Component looks better than HDMI on Samsung's BD-P1000

And so the bad quality Blu-ray player saga continues with the video quality being better via component video than HDMI. Bill Hunt had the opportunity to take his BD-P1000 over to Pioneer's headquarters and do a side-by-side test with the Pioneer BDP-HD1 on their gorgeous 50-inch 1080p plasma. The Pioneer did look better then the Sammy to start with but when component was used for the Samsung, it came really close. The Pioneer did have a better picture with deeper contrasts and more detail though, but the player was outputting 1080p over HDMI to a native 1080p display; it should look better. Oh and they did test VC-1 material on both players and it does look "absolutely spectacular;" dramatically better then the MPEG-2 stuff out right now. It's a good read.
None of us own this player yet so we can't tell you for sure if this is true yet so we are relying on you readers. Try this and tell us what you think. Does component video in fact look better then HDMI on Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray player?

Whoa, this is really interesting.
I just mentioned on another post that Component looks better than HDMI on my Motorola HD DVR from Comcast. I have a 1080p Westy LCD. Maybe there's a connection here.

One of the reasons why HDMI 1.3 is so important is because of issues like this. Saying a TV is "native 1080p" right now is misleading; currently, most sets achieve 1080p by interpolating the 1080i feed, even if a Blu-Ray player is set to output 1080p. This is why 1st gen HD-DVD players currently output 1080i only. I expect a marked difference between 1080i and 1080p won't appear until HDMI 1.3 players and sets start hitting the market.
Sony's 1st party Blu-Ray player was delayed the very week the HDMI 1.3 spec was finalized. I don't think that's a coincidence.

I'm sorry, why would I believe anything not positive about manufacturer A saying something about manufacturer B? Isn't this worse than listening to a non-manufacturer being paid by a manufacturer to make its conclusions pro-paychecker?

ok so i just tried it out with a bunch of blu-ray movies and i can say that there is nothing to this idea that the component looks better than hdmi. I tried the hdmi and the component both over 1080i and the hdmi looked better, not that much better but still better

derek above says that 1080i HDMI looks as good as component. Bill Hunt mentioned that he was trying 1080p. Now I've heard that this player converts from 1080p (for 1080p encoded discs) to 1080i, and then back again to 1080p. Maybe it's this 1080p conversion that's causing the quality loss, not the hdmi output itself? Just a thought.
