Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray player really IS delayed: October 25
The internet went ablaze a couple weeks ago when someone finally noticed that the Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray player had been delayed until August on their SonyStyle website (even though it had been like that since April). Now, our friends at HDBlog have noticed that the date has changed again, now shipping on or about October 25th.
Ouch. Although as HDBlog notes, SonyStyle is sometimes delayed in receiving new products, until now their website has reflected the exact expected shipping date of Sony's Blu-ray player so we believe it still does. There have been reports that Sony's hardware is still far from ready, and this could support that conclusion, or may be they are just waiting for better quality movies to be available. Another theory suggests they are delaying the BDP-S1 to increase drive availability for the Playstation 3 and alleviate shortages.
Whatever the cause, HD DVD is on the ground and gaining momentum, if the BDP-S1 keeps slipping, the PS3 may end up being Sony's first Blu-ray release.

Maybe they should add HD-DVD support to it since it's delayed til October!

Ohh the Humanity! Delayed again? *goes back to watching The Rundown on HD DVD*

Wow.....Sony really had us snowed. When CES rolled around they probably knew they were a half year away from being ready.
I expect this incompetence is going to cost the BDA a studio. Look for someone to defect and come over the the platform that is shipping with DL discs.

hdmi 1.3 would be worth the wait!
hmurchison @ Jun 21st 2006 10:55PM
You still need an A/V receiver with HDMI 1.3 and support for TrueHD and DTS HD. I think it'd be nice but I'm not sure HDMI One-three is going to makeup for another delay.
Dave @ Jun 21st 2006 11:18PM
No! They should wait for 1.4!

Delays! Delays! But really there is not much media available anyway.

Sony is a Liar! Who cares anymore? If they continual to bring out the HD DVD's that look more like Superbit DVD's then I am sticking with my Toshiba HD. I mean really? How dare they brag about 1080P and bring out substandard DVD’s that are of obviously less quality than Toshiba 1080i's. Yes I know all about the Mpeg vs. VC1 compression. But I don’t accept excuses for an inferior product. Sony has lied about the date of PS3, the lied about the having one single price they lied about 1080p(499 model), they lied about Blue Ray 1080P being the best looking. Hell I guess they are just liars.

Am I the only one who does not ever care anymore?
I mean, come on, this is just a big joke.

I still don't understand how Sony can invent the technology, release the movies, but can't produce a player to use the technology or play their own movies before their competitors can.

Why buy a player without HDMI 1.3 support?
Jasons Deli Manager @ Jun 24th 2006 11:51PM
Okay...I pre-ordered a player in April and back then it was announced for an August 15th ship date. So I call Sony Style to see what the delay was. Anyway they said they will have the first 100 players shipping out on July 31st. Go Figure...i'm number 99.
