World Cup causes HDTV selling frenzy
We are sure that some of you could care less about the World Cup then what Martha Stewart had for dinner last night. But then there are some people that MUST watch it and live it. The later type of people are those that are causing HDTVs to fly off the shelves over in England. Check this out. Currys, an UK electronic store, is selling flat-screens at the rate of one every 15 seconds! They have noticed a 50% increase in sales of HDTVs and flat-screens and when you add in the drop in price with the World Cup, anyone can understand why. But the sales increase just isn't in the normal consumer line ether. Bang & Olufsen, über-high end, has experienced a 500% increase in their HDTV sales too! So we have to ask. Has anyone bought a HDTV with the World Cup solely in mind?

these people are buying these screens not knowing that they also need to buy SkyHD or Telewest TV Drive (and SkyHD won't have 33% of the matches that are on ITV) to enable them to view HD and if they order either now they won't get installed until well after the world cup!

Didnt by a HDTV for the World Cup, had one already. I did get DISH so could watch all the games in HD. Is that close enough?

I bought my HDTV so I could watch anything and everything in HD that I could possibly get my hands on! I got the Sharp 45" 1080p LCD HDTV and it is the second most beatiful thing I have seen in the world next to my wife, and then next to the HD programming of course.

Ordered mine this morning for that very reason. I've been eyeing one for a while, but getting it for the world cup was the clincher (really).

I very nearly did (until I found the bank balance looking a bit worse than expected!). Can get the HD terrestrial broadcasts, so was hoping to watch it through that using my computer to decode the signal.

I think I'm going to buy a Sharp 45" 1080p LCD HDTV if I can get John's wife in HD, then again maybe not since he apparently beats her...

YES! I bought a Westinghouse 32" HD LCD last week for the world cup and just yesterday ordered the cable company's HD PVR so I can at least watch a few more of the games after work in fantabulouso HD. Of couse as my luck would have it, our cable does not have ESPN2 in high def where more than half the games will be shown. I figured the WC was worth the $25 for a month's rental. The box will go back after the final.

YES! I bought a Westinghouse 32" LCD last week expressly to watch the World Cup. I just yesterday ordered a HD PVR from our friendly neighborhood cable crooks so I can watch a few of the games after work recorded in all of their fantabulouso glory. Of course as luck would have it, we don't get ESPN2(more than half the games!) in high def here. Oh well, the box goes back after the final.
