HD DVD sells out in Japan
...all 1500 units. We're not sure whether to check
the W or L column for that one, but Toshiba seems encouraged. Although reports previously indicated Toshiba shipped
10,000 players to the U.S., this one says only 5,000 were released with 6,000 more to follow "soon".Also interesting is that in the Japanese market, the availability of recorders is considered to be much more key than only playback devices. Toshiba's are expected by June in Japan while Blu-ray has not announced a release date yet.

Toshiba plans to release HD-DVD recorders in May or June, in time for the World Cup, while Sony has yet to announce when Blu-ray Disc recorders will be ready.

Sony introduced a Blu-Ray recorder in 2003, if I recall correctly.
As for Toshiba selling out of HD DVD players.. when I was at BestBuy yesterday in Northern CA, they had a stack of them available. How funny I can buy a HD DVD player in the US, when it's sold out in Japan, but I can't locate a Xbox 360 here, when they're plentiful in Japan.
