David, alot of people can't see the compression artificts even when they are compressing, I wish I couldn't.
As for the sound, it is hard to tell the differene between HBO's DD5.1 and a DVD, but once again I am plagued with the ear to hear the difference. I really love when the DVD provides DTS.
As for the crop, HBO crops most of their 2.35 movies to 16x9 so that there are no black bars. When Harry potter was on HBO the other day there were no black bar despite being a 2.35 movie.
I am glad you enjoy you HD movies via HBO and wish I could too. I guess I will have to wait for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
