HDBeat Podcast 008 - 04.11.06
This week we kick off
the new HD-DVD standard by discussing it ad nauseum. Kevin and I can't get enough and since we don't think you can
either we asked HDBeat reader, listner and contributor Erik Hanson on the show
to referee Kevin and I. (of couse I picked the referee) It isn't all HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray; we cover some of the biggest
stories this week as well as some great HD sports coverage.Get the podcast

I mention Vista only supporting HDMI on Premium editions at around 8:20 in the podcast, what I meant to say was "HDCP," as in the copy-protection side of output. I'll try and find the article to back up my claim, although now when I google for it, I can't seem to find any supporting documentation:
From Oct 2005 on PC Stats ( http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1871 )
Oh well, at least I can admit when I'm wrong. Sorry to get anyone worked up unnecessarily!

I was just listening to the comments about the Harry Potter movie in HD on Cable, and I've got to say that my cable company isn't cropping or downgrading the sound. I just watched the new Harry Potter on DVD, and my wife (who isn't a videophile) commented that it looked like crap. HD in my area is much better. I'll admit that it still has a ways to go (lots of compression artifacts in last nights broadcasting), but it's still better than DVD.

David, alot of people can't see the compression artificts even when they are compressing, I wish I couldn't.
As for the sound, it is hard to tell the differene between HBO's DD5.1 and a DVD, but once again I am plagued with the ear to hear the difference. I really love when the DVD provides DTS.
As for the crop, HBO crops most of their 2.35 movies to 16x9 so that there are no black bars. When Harry potter was on HBO the other day there were no black bar despite being a 2.35 movie.
I am glad you enjoy you HD movies via HBO and wish I could too. I guess I will have to wait for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
