Samsung pushes BD-P1000 to 6/25/06

Steve from Crutchfield is reporting over at the AVSForum, that the first Blu-Ray player from Samsung, the BD-P1000 is getting pushed back from May 23, 2006 to June 25, 2006. This is really bad news for the Blu-Ray Camp and especially for the studios that have already announced titles for that date. This is starting to look like HD-DVD all over again, I had hoped that Blu-Ray wouldn't make the same mistakes and it seems that Warren and Kevin were right to be skeptical. Did you hear that guys? I said you were right, mark your calendars.
I have learned to trust the information from the AVSForum, but this is one of those times when I hoping that they are wrong.

I wish I were more surprised, but I'm not.

I'll be waiting awhile until the dust settles on a standard anyway. Or until one of the encryption schemes is cracked and we can archive copies. Then again, at CES Gates touted Vista's ability to make authorized hard drive dups of HD-DVD ... but who knows when that OS will ship and with what features. Bottom line - I'm at least a year out on any DVD upgrades... 480p and 5.1 is working for me.

It's not that much of a surprise. The Blu Ray camp has waged a Press Release war. At CES 2006 they had nothing but pretty mockups.
The Playstation 3 isn't shipping until November and the prices of Blu Ray are outlanding. Even with HD DVD delays it's clear who's technology is fit for mass consumption and who's technology was primarily lab creations. I'll leave that one up for you to figure out.

hmurchison,
Pioneer had a production Blu-Ray player on display, they even had a remote that was working.
But other than that they were all prototypes. I also seem to remember thinking Panasonic's looked real, but I only remember the Pioneer rep saying their's was real.

Where's the official word?

Not entirely surprising, but not good news for the Blu-Ray camp. However, there's a video out from a Sony exec where he states their initial $1000 model is "high-end", i.e. equivalent to their ES line. I'd put money on seeing a cheaper Sony (somewhere between the $500 and $800 Toshiba is going for) in the not-too-distant future. One other thing to note is that Toshiba is still the only company manufacturing HD DVD players, and they're (a) not making very many of them, and (b) essentially throwing away initial crappy models for a refresh in late 06/early 07.
BTW, #3 (hmurchison) is a Toshiba rep, so I'd take his comments and opinions regarding Blu-ray with a huuuuuge grain of salt.

Zombie I'm a Toshiba Laptop rep. I don't touch HD DVD. Don't get me wrong I'm a definite Blu Ray purchaser but frankly the BDA's attitude turns me cold as for hyping their product. Looking forward to a PS3 and perhaps a Universal. Regards.
