Here at HDBeat we may
be a little naive, maybe it is
because we are so excited about having HD movies we are willing to take it at any cost or maybe it is because all of
our TV's have
HDCP inputs. Either way we were excited when the
studios started to announce that they
wouldn't down rez over
component, but not everyone is so trusting. Phillip Swann over at
TVPredictions.com thinks this is a case of the old bait and switch. He seems to
believe they are responding to a possible fall out of all those that would be left in the cold. Personally I think that
him and most others remind me of chicken little. I will keep looking up, but I don't believe that the sky is falling.

I just don't get why they feel the need to down rez analog.
Is there really a problem with analog (component) captures?
Are there even any consumer-level video capture cards with component in? Am I missing something here?
And is there any (again, consumer-level) equipment out there that can take an "unprotected" DVI stream and record it?
Someone enlighten me, I'd love to know.

I think there are ways of recording analog HD - don't the DVHS recorders do this? I'm not sure.
As to recording a DVI stream, I think you're right. I haven't heard of anything that can record it. But that's today. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
Personally, I'm leary of the studios as well. I have a feeling that we'll get nice HD on analog for a while, but that eventually it'll be yanked out from under our feet. Hollywood has never passed up a chance to annoy us before...

There is no consumer analog HD recording device, of course their are pro version but they cost too much.
DVHS can only record hd via 1394 and there is copy protection in place called 5C.
I don't think they want to down rez. I think they built that into the spec in case it became a problem and everyone assumed that they were going to take advantage of it. This has been confirmed recently by the studios stating that they won't donw rez.

"Trust but verify" is my motto. So long as the studios keep the option open, you have to be prepared for a possible switcheroo.
