You mentioned cable boxes must have HDMI. As of now, this isnt the case. I work at a small cable company (small compared to Comcast) and we do offer HD boxes with DVI (w/ DCP) output.
Also, I wanted to mention that I too have had a few universal remotes that might have been able to control all my devices, but weren't worth the trouble. I must say the the Logitech Harmony 880 is working great for me. The web based interface for programming isnt as quick as I think it should be, but I am finally able to control all my devices with one remote.
