Warner HD-DVD titles: April 18th 2006
We hate to say that we told you so,
but...... The good news is that Warner has set a nice hard release date for their 3 HD-DVD movies. On April 18th 2006 we will be able to watch any movie we want as long as we want to watch either Million Dollar Baby, The Last Samurai or The Phantom of the Opera. I don't know about you but I am going to watch the Opera one because I have already seen the other two a few times.
Seriously there are 17 more titles to follow in the following weeks, including my personal favorite "The Matrix". I am going to hold out on buying a HD-DVD player until there are at least 10 titles to rent at Netflix, but that's just me.
Are you going to wait or have you already re-submitted your pre-order? Will Toshiba still release the players on March 28th without the movies?

Funny stuff about watching any movie you want, as long as it is one of three. Gee whiz I can't wait!!
Of the three, I have only seen "Baby". I really don't think that is going to be that impressive in HD. Most of it was shot in a dark boxing gym.
I will be amazed if Toshiba makes the March 28 deadline.

I'm guessing March 28 doesn't mean much now. Anything up to and including April 18 will be just fine.
Personally, I don't see buying a player until the library is sufficient that I would want to begin upgrading my DVD collection. I won't watch a movie just because it is in HD. That's what the PBS channel was for. I've watched my share of HD babbling brooks and tourism videos.
Oh, and considering that my TV doesn't have HDMI inputs, I might not be venturing into HD movie territory until SED sees the light of day.

I won't be upgrading my DVD collection for HD. Well, that's a lie. I'll be buying Star Wars again in HD. And whenever I get my first BD or HD DVD player, I'll probably buy a title I know I like, just for the coolness factor, whether or not I have it on DVD. So that's a total of six or maybe seven titles I plan to rebuy.

Henning,
Eventually, you are going to get used to HD to the point where your old DVDs will look sadly inferior, and you will want to upgrade them.
But who knows, by that time physical media will be a thing of the past anyways.

Too late already happend.
Seriously, I agree with you 100%, I already don't watch them in SD.
I have the complete Clint Eastwood western collection real cheap if anyone is interested. ;)

Warner has not yet commented but indications are that they will down-rezz the image over the analog component video outputs using the ICT flag in HDCP. If that's the case many early adopters will not buy HD from Warner Video. C'mon Warner make a press release that you won't down-res, agree not to punish early HD adopters.
