Unfortunately, combo units may be good for LG, and for consumers who don't want to have to buy more than one unit, but bad for the market. You'll never have a winner in the format war, which means prices on both varieties of media, both varieties of PC drives, and both varieties of non-combo, stand-alone players will stay higher longer.
You are forgetting: 1) Probably the only reason why we are getting HD products now instead of probably about tewn years ago is that The Establish ment aren't making enough profits.
2) If a multi player is cheap enough and good enough, preferably 1080p, HDmi 1.3 and all relevant functions including reliability then it will sell.
3) It would be interesting how long can all the organisations go for before they reach a, cash flow' situation. A) Pay salaries B) Pay share holders C) Watching any company who creates a multi player control the world market and making huge profits D) Some ompanies have spent huge amounts of money which they will have to replace. E) A relatively a few companies will be making money from Licences but most won't be able to sit around biding their time (doing mnothing) - until they go bankrupt.
If the chinese government is allowing HD DVD to go into the chinese market and not Blu-ray then Bluray has probably loss the war already!
Relativeley a few percentages of the chinese population buying an HD DVD would probably be more money than HD could make in the west.
Why do think that western companies are falling over theirselves to sell goods to china and forget country loyalty and loyal staff?
To maximise their profits.
Even if EVD the chinese upgrade to DVD works I am sure that they would also want a cheap high definition (HD) player - they have ferraris and Rolls Royce cars so why not HD DVDs?
I forgot to state that it should be relatively easy for somebody to use a different encryption code if the China can create excellent HD products and under cut; 1) Blu-ray 2) HD DVD and 3) HDMI etcetera
I don't think that too many people will be shedding too many tears if for example Blu-ray, HD DVD and or HDMI etcetera were made obsolete - probably ripping people off with useles products, whilst making at least millions!

And the answer is no. None whatsoever.
