After months of waiting for RCA to locate a bulb which they couldn't do. The set was replaced with a new model on 1/19/06. The new set has quite a bit better picture and does have a day and night brightness setting. The reason why was because the plan cost over $400 and covered everything it normally covers including the bulb but you are entitled to the replacement of just 1 bulb, this was the case with both Best Buy and PC Richard, read your fine print don't go by what a sales guy tells you. Second reason is that within the 1st year of ownership you have to go through the manufacturer warranty. If all conditions are the same the chances of something failing will be within the first 720 hours of operation. If it clears that mark the probability of something failing without any external influences is highly unlikely. So pick up a bulb when you see them at a reasonable price and keep it on the shelf you probably will end up saving over $200

Matador

Comments on DLP bulbs and Dynamic settings

Get the Sears plan, they are so screwed up, they will accidentally send you 2 bulbs, and then you'll have an extra. The technician who repaired it the last time told me the ballast and the bulb were incompatible and that panasonic was aware of the problem and were making new ballasts to extend the life of the bulbs but that if he were in my position he'd wait until the ballast goes again and take the maintenance reciepts for the three replacements and get my money back. He said the Lemon Law applies but the burden is on me to prove the repairs were needed despite the fact I went through Best Buy with all the repairs. Unfortunately bulbs are a disposable part so the Lemon Law doesn't apply. He advised me not to buy an HDTV with a bulb in it. He said they need to be replaced all the time even if they don't burn out because the luminescence fades over useage time. They are far too expensive to replace. Mine are $400 a pop. Thankfully I haven't had to pay for any yet but bought one anyway since it's sometimes three or four weeks before they can come out to do repairs. Purchased Oct. 2003. Bulb died in Feb. 2004, another in April 2004 and recently Nov 2005. It's not the TV brand itself but the bulb manufacturer. I use a philips bulb in my samsung. Friend has a Sony HDTV LCD Projection (Not the true LCD type) and it also been trough 2 bulbs in 3 years. With the latest bulb replacement on mine, I noticed that they used a new philips bulb model that probably was reworked to fix some of the previous bulb life issues. When I had two bulbs go out in 2004, I know that they had a hard time getting service to replace the bulb because they couldn't get any in stock. Philips couldn't keep up with the demand for replacements I guess. Could there be a Class Action in the near future?
For once in my life I was actually glad to have the Best Buy PSP for the TV. Just to clarify, my TV is the Samsung HL-P5063W purchased in November 2004 through an online reseller bundled with a 3-year Mac warranty extension that does not cover bulbs.

The replacement bulb did not fix the problem. I called Samsung and they offered to extend my original warranty to 15 months so now I have a tech coming out to look at the problem. It appears to be just another settings preset and suggest using this mode "during the day." I selected it primarily because DVD movies were playing too dark.
