Sony boss: "HD Era doesn't start until we're on the market"
SCE prez Phil Harrison is said to lay the verbal smackdown on the Xbox 360 in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz tomorrow. Among other things, he says the 360 doesn't play high definition movies and doesn't have true high definition functionality. He cites the lack of high definition DVD support and 1080p HDTV output as reasons why the Xbox 360 does not provide the high definition experience the PS3 will next year.Bold words, but it really feels like just bluster until Sony shows off playable games and locks down a US launch timeframe. It is true that we will not see how the content and display capabilities plus the overall game quality of both systems match up until both big players are at the table.
Still, even though Phil says the high definition party hasn't started yet, I am drunk off of Project Gotham 3 and I'm pretty sure that's Kevin passed out in the corner with a lampshade on his head. We'll wake him up in time before the PS3 gets here, promise.

They like to talk the talk, but they stumble when the walk comes around.

Interesting, but seeing that I already have a TV bearing the HDTV logo and all available broadcast content is 720p/1080i, I have to wonder why 1080p is important to me. Pop over to the Sony site and check out the 40" LCD KDL-V40XBR1. Part of the Bravia series, the native resolution of this is 720p. Step up to the WEGA Plasma KDE-42XBR950 and you get 1024x768 resolution. No HDMI either. I could go on, but the only 1080p product I found on the Sony site is the VPL-VW100 which is a front projector with a list price of $10k. But at least you get HDMI, since this seems to be a requirement for the PS3. Don't get me wrong, I love HDMI and my set has it, but there aren't that many 1080p products out there and the affordable ones don't have HDMI. If the true HD era means $10k displays then I can wait. And enjoy the current era now. 1080i is nice, 720p is nice. Less than $1000 for my HD set was nicer.

Everytime I'm on live you're playing PGR3. There should be a odometer to show you how far you've driven in that game.

Its nice they're thinking about the future, unlike with the PS2. They're puting future technology! It pissed me off when my xbox and PS2 didn't Hi-Def
freestufftimes.com @ Dec 13th 2005 6:49PM
So, because the xbox360 doesnt support 1080p, a format that about 3 or 4 tvs out there right now will even support, it will fail? I agree that high def dvds would have really set the 360 apart, but at this point it would cost so much I understand why it doesn't have it.

If ya guys want to play me...I should be able to log on thurs/friday.
My last final is tomorrow afternoon. If ya head to my blog, you can see my gamercard and gamertag right there (should be right side), if ya cant, toss me an email.

Sorry, didnt read through all the comments.
So, HDMI...people say Microsoft doesnt have the ability to put one out. That is actually incorrected (based on a Teamxbox.com interview of one of the head ATI guys). 1080p I do not know of.
BUT, one of the main reasons that MS did not put out an HDMI cable right now, is while there ARE people that use it (some fellow Xbox MVP AV freaks), looking at the general public it is small. They have not ruled out putting one out yet.
Also, another thing that was a big "problem" is the lack of the next gen optical drive. Now, looking at it, look what happened today, HD-DVD was delayed.

Somewhere I heard that the PS3 was suppose to have a life span of something like 10 years, I really cant remember where I heard that but you can imagine that in the next 5 years 1080p TVs will more available and cheaper. The PS3 has a lot of new technology in it already: Cell processor, Blu-Ray, 2 HDMI cables?!? (a lil skeptic of that...), and of course 1080p. So yeah, now 1080p sounds a lot like a "mine's is bigger than yours" battle but we all know how fast technology advances, so 1080p is more of an investment in the future.
freestufftimes.com @ Dec 14th 2005 12:57AM
If you look at the past 10 years, you must see how much technology has improved. Have we come to a point where its not going to grow as fast as it has in the past? Most likely, but the ps3 lasting 10 years? I doubt it.

So I was over at Target today and was playing the 360 (and may I add it was impressive) But I am in the same boat as most of us here. Sony is just trying to say 'I have something bigger and better' when 1080p has a long way to go.
While I was standing in the checkout of said Target a lady walked by with a Memorex 'old' CRT with only cable coax in. That right there shows you that our 720p's still have along way to go. Let alone 1080p. So to me Sony is just tooting there horn over something that won't be a factor for another 5 years.

Here is a link that backs up the statement of the PS3 having an expected 10 year lifespan.
Richard Lawler @ Dec 14th 2005 5:15PM
It backs up the *statement.
Ken Kutaragi also has said that if too many cell processors were connected together, they would crash the entire internet. He said we would see Toy Story quality graphics on the Playstation in real time. Sony does not plan on the PS3 still being the premiere gaming system 10 years from now, it's just silly when you think about how much technology advances from year to year.
Matt Gerlach @ Dec 14th 2005 7:35PM
They believe that their consoles can have a 10 year lifespan.
They keep producung them for 10 years after launch. I guess it can happen (look at the PSOne)...but, who wants to buy that, when you spend a little more and get something SO much better/
