Blu-Ray DVD titles from FOX
It's amusing to see the various companies lining up on both sides of the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD battle. Can't we all just get along? Why is it that anytime we have a potentially new standard, the corporate world forgets about the consumer and just focuses on the side that will earn more revenue?DVD format battle aside, there is some consumer news on the topic. Twentieth Century Fox, who backs Blu-Ray if you're keeping score, has announced some movie titles for the new format. Look for the following movies to become available on Blu-Ray:
- Alien I-IV
- Die Hard Trilogy
- X-Men I & II
- I, Robot
- There's Something About Mary
- Moulin Rouge
- Sound of Music

Interesting and rather deep flows the water here... The interesting point is that its really major distribution houses that matter and they are the ones to weigh-in on it when it happens. Think names like Universal and Gulf & Western, etc. The rest is MFG and shops.
One thing i find fascinating is the HD-WMV format as opposed to mpeg2 etc, and the new and fragile "Media Center Pro" market. The image is quite nice from that, and it is very compact with all the required DRM (Digital Rights Management)
I think when the time comes ( very soon ) it is likely a win-win for the smart consumer who really wants the best, since it is the High Def DVD that will deliver your best 1080p. I have seen it and it is superb.

Why are you using this post to bash encoders, especially BD supports the same formats as HD-DVD? Sheesh.
More to the point, however...
Fox has already released almost all these titles in HD!! They're available on D-VHS. So it's really no surprise this is their first batch of titles for BD.
Glad to see some announced titles on the way for BD.

Fox is the distributor of the Star Wars saga on home video. That means we can expect Episodes I through VI to hit Blu-Ray. And what does that mean? HD-DVD loses. As for codecs, look for Blu-Ray to drop Windows Media 9 (AV-1) from official support. H.264 is better, and why exactly would Sony be willing to pay Microsoft a royalty on each Playstation3 just to offer support for AV-1?
